Walnut Plates
Species ( if known )
Juglans hindsii, or Native Nevada Black Walnut.
Those from Nevada and those who now call our Great Basin home are often surprised that agriculture is still our third largest industry. Even more surprising, when a enormous tree of such towering height and caliper are found in our secretly lush high desert canyons and a native species.
Measurements
This offering is for 2 TWO 9 1/2 x 1 5/8 with gentle curving slope interior plates.
Provenance
In keeping with the Kintsugi philosophy, this was part of a approx 80 year old downed tree on the Buena Vista Creek in Unionville, Nevada.
Process
The felled tree to most looked unworthy of milling and it was suggested it become firewood when I brought it home to my farm and studio. The best part of being a woodworker with a giant fireplace in studio is the endless supply of wood to burn, the worst is every piece grabs my eyes and hands wanting to see what is beneath its surface. It was milled into large slabs for live edge mantles, tables, and custom counters. The milling process creates a great deal of slash or wood waste. Often this is where I find some of the most fascinating opportunities for grain patterns, chatoyance, and characteristics that make each object one of a kind. Many turners pride themselves on replicating and perfection in their Art. I prefer the Kintsugi way of allowing a thing to be a thing and make it beautiful as it exists. While all plates will be both similar in size and appearance each will truly be a unique and complete piece on its own.
